Since we travel a lot with the benefits of my American Express Platinum credit card, we have gold status with both Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy. Meanwhile, we have stayed in a number of Marriott as well as Hilton hotels and on this page, I will take you through the differences between the Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy programs.
Free breakfast, room upgrades, lounge access, early check-in and late check-out. Hotel benefits are quite nice.
Are you a frequent traveller and unsure whether to choose Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy? Both loyalty programmes offer benefits such as free hotel nights, room upgrades and (elite) status. But which one suits you best? I will list the differences for you.
On this page
1. Earning points: Who gives you the most value?
With both programmes, you earn points on overnight stays, special promotions or partners/credit cards. Yet there are differences in how best to use these points:
| ✅ Hilton Honors | ✅ Marriot Bonvoy |
| – Up to 100% bonus points for Diamond members. | – Up to 75% bonus points for elite members. |
| – Get Gold status via a credit card such as the American Express card, for example, without having to stay in hotels. | – Get Gold Elite status instantly through a credit card such as American Express, without having to stay at the hotel. |
💡 Best choice: Hilton is better if you want to get Diamond status faster without having to stay many nights. Marriott, on the other hand, offers more hotels to earn extra points.

2. Free nights: where to get more out of your points?
The question of where to get more out of your points is difficult to answer and highly dependent on individual hotel promotions and availability at the hotel you want to stay at. Still, based on averages, you can assume the following:
- Hilton Honors: ~0.5 cents per point.
- Marriott Bonvoy: ~0.7 cents per point.
Marriott points are worth more on average, but award nights – nights you can book with points – often have dynamic prices. This means that hotel nights sometimes cost more points or less. Hilton is more consistent in this regard, but often charges slightly more points for its hotels.
💡 Best choice: Although I’m leaning towards a tie – it’s hard to pick a winner as it depends heavily on dates, availability and promotions – you get more value for your points on average at Marriott.
3. Hotel benefits. What do you get with which status?
Achieving status at a hotel offers several benefits, but what can you expect at Marriott or Hilton? Below is a brief overview of some of the key benefits and differences between the two programmes.
| Advantage | Marriott Bonvoy | Hilton Honors |
|---|---|---|
| Free breakfast | From Gold | From Platinum |
| Late check-out | Not guaranteed | Until 16:00 |
| Suite upgrades | Yes, but granted less frequently | Yes, from Platinum onwards |
| Lounge access | From Gold (if available) | From Platinum |
| Number of nights for highest status | 60 nights (Diamond) | 60 nights + €25,000 (Ambassador) |
✅ Hilton Honors gives free breakfast as early as Gold status, which is a big advantage for less frequent travellers and one of the reasons I often book a Hilton hotel.
✅ Marriott Bonvoy has stronger elite status with guaranteed benefits like late check-out and lounge access, but the lack of breakfast is a big drawback for me.
💡 Best choice: Hilton is better if you don’t spend many nights in any of their hotels but still want extra benefits. Marriott offers more luxury and better elite treatment if you do spend many nights in their hotels, but that only applies from Platinum status.

4. Hotels & Global Coverage
If you go to unfamiliar or smaller cities, I can imagine you would still like to sleep in a nice hotel with the security of your status benefits. So it is important for hotels to have good representation.
Here, differences in brands are important to offer budget, mid-range, or luxury hotels.
| Programme | Number of hotels | Brands |
|---|---|---|
| Hilton Honors | 7.200+ | 18+ |
| Marriott Bonvoy | 8.500+ | 30+ |
Marriott has more hotels, including high-end brands such as St. Regis, Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott. Hilton has fewer hotels, but strong brands such as Conrad and Waldorf Astoria, as well as Doubletree and Garden Inn for the more budget side
💡 Best choice: With more brands and more hotels worldwide, Marriott has an advantage over Hilton Honors.
Which one should you choose?
✔ Choose Hilton Honors if you:
- Want to achieve Gold status quickly (e.g. via an American Express Platinum card).
- Seek consistent benefits, such as free breakfast from Gold status
- Be a fan of brands such as the Conrad and Waldorf Astoria.
✔ Choose Marriott Bonvoy if you:
- Are a flexible traveller who wants to make the most of their elite status.
- Looking for exclusive hotels and high-end experiences and want guaranteed benefits.
Conclusion
Both programmes have strong benefits. Hilton is easier and faster for short-term benefits, while Marriott offers more exclusivity and higher value for those who travel a lot. Choose the programme that best suits your travel style and get the most out of your stay!
